Recognition of Scholarly Contribution to Science and Technology
IAS Bank of East Asia Professor Ching W. TANG Receives Honors for His Outstanding Achievements
This is a year to remember for Ching W. TANG, IAS Bank of East Asia Professor, who was inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame and received the award of Doctor of Science honoris causa from the University of Hong Kong.
Internationally known as the “Father of OLED,” the Hong Kong–born scientist was inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame for his pioneering work with Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology. OLED is an advance in flat-panel displays in computers, cell phones and televisions that provides increased power efficiency, longer battery life and improved display quality. As one of the 2018 class of inductees, Tang joined hands with other visionary individuals whose creative inventions have made the world a better place to receive the honor at the 47th annual induction ceremony of the National Inventors Hall of Fame in May.
Tang’s contribution to science has also been recognized by the local community. At the 199th Congregation of the University of Hong Kong in June 2018, Tang was conferred the award of Doctor of Science honoris causa for his invention of OLED technology. Without Tang’s discovery, OLED technology would not have been applied in many consumer and household electronic devices, nor would it have generated enormous business opportunities worldwide, as it has done.
