Chinese Literature in a Global Age

Since 2013, lAS has run the lAS Program on Chinese Creative Writing in collaboration with the School of Humanities and Social Science and the Division of Humanities. Spearheaded by the world-renowned literary critic and writer, lAS Senior Visiting Fellow Prof Liu Zaifu, the program is designed to drive discussion on the characteristics and prospects of Chinese writing in a global age. In fall 2016, distinguished Chinese writers and scholars including Mr Shaogong Han, Mr Yiwei Xue, and lAS Visiting Professor Bright Sheng were invited to HKUST to discuss changes in Chinese literature, the writers' vision and the Dream of the Red Chamber.

The program comprised a series of presentations and discussion sessions in which the audience and acclaimed scholars exchanged their ideas and explored the beauty of contemporary Chinese literature. The participation of faculty and students from science and technology backgrounds also gave rise to a diverse mix of perspectives that served as a breeding ground for innovation. As Steve Jobs once said, "Technology alone is not enough—it's technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the results that make our heart sing."
