An Honor of Two Cities
In celebration of HKUST’s 25th anniversary, we were honored to have Sir John Pendry, Chair Professor in Theoretical Solid State Physics from Imperial College London, as one of the 25 distinguished guests participating in our Global Alumni Conference in London. Having been our IAS Visiting Professor since 2011, Sir John shared his experience with HKUST at the event which was held at the Naval and Military Club on 14 November 2015. HKUST faculty from various disciplines also gave talks on the frontiers of science, which were well attended by over 120 guests, alumni and students from the UK and across Europe.
On 20 November 2015, we were equally honored that Sir John was being conferred an honorary doctorate of Science in HKUST’s 23rd Congregation held in Hong Kong. As a renowned condensed matter theorist, he is widely recognized for his research into the creations of “perfect” lens and the first practical invisibility cloak. Throughout the years, he has shared his insights with our colleagues and students through various IAS distinguished lectures, symposium and workshop. He has been the ninth IAS Visiting Professor who received HKUST honorary doctorates.
